What Is Harvest Festival? A Simple Guide for Children
A little bit of autumn, a little bit of gratitude and a lovely reason to slow down together.
There’s something rather special about autumn.
Crunchy leaves underfoot, chilly morning walks, warm drinks, cosy jumpers and the changing colours of the trees.
And amongst all those little signs of autumn comes Harvest Festival, a chance to stop, look around and appreciate the food we have, the people who grow it and the natural world that helps it all happen.
But what actually is Harvest Festival?
And how do you explain it to little ones?
Let’s keep it simple...
🌾 So, what is Harvest Festival?
Harvest Festival is a time to celebrate and give thanks for the food that has been grown and gathered during the year.
Traditionally, people would bring food from their harvest to share with others, particularly with people who needed a little extra help.
Today, Harvest Festival is celebrated in lots of different ways, at schools, churches and within communities.
But the simple message remains:
Be thankful for our food, the people who provide it and the natural world that helps it grow.
And that's something children can easily understand.

🍎 How can I explain it to my child?
You don't need a long explanation.
Try: “Harvest is a time when we say thank you for all the food that grows around us and for the people who help grow and provide it.”
Then have a little look around your kitchen.
Can you work out where your food comes from?
🍎 Apple → Tree
🥕 Carrot → Underground
🥔 Potato → Underground
🌽 Corn → Plant
🍓 Strawberry → Plant
Then ask:
“What do you think plants need to grow?”
You might be surprised by where the conversation takes you.

💛 Harvest & Gratefulness
Harvest Festival is also a lovely opportunity to talk to children about being grateful.
And gratefulness doesn't have to mean big, important things.
Sometimes it's the little things. A favourite meal. A warm bed. A muddy walk. Someone reading a bedtime story. A hug. A sunny afternoon. A cosy blanket.
Try asking your child:
What are you thankful for today?
Or...
🌿 What do you love about being outside?
🍎 What's your favourite food?
🐝 What are you glad nature gives us?
🏡 What makes you feel cosy?
❤️ Who would you like to say thank you to?
There are no right answers.
Even “my teddy” counts.
It's simply about helping children notice the good things around them.

🍂 Welcome a Little Autumn Cosiness
Autumn doesn't need to be complicated.
In fact, it's probably one of the best seasons for slowing down.
Why not...
☕ Have a warm drink after a chilly walk.
📚 Read a favourite story under a blanket.
🍎 Bake something delicious together.
🍁 Collect fallen leaves and make a picture.
🌰 Look for conkers and acorns.
🌧️ Put on your wellies and go puddle hunting.
🕯️ Have a cosy family dinner and talk about your favourite part of the day.
The best memories don't always come from carefully planned activities.
Sometimes they're found in the ordinary little moments.

🧺 Go on a Harvest Adventure
Why not take your Harvest Festival celebration outside?
Head out for a walk and see what you can discover.
Can you find:
🍂 A beautiful autumn leaf
🌰 An acorn or conker
🐦 A bird
🌻 Something still flowering
🌳 Something growing
🍎 Something that could be part of a harvest
👃 Something that smells interesting
And here's the important bit...
You don't have to collect everything you find.
Sometimes the best way to enjoy nature is to look, listen and leave it where it is.

🌱 A Little Reminder About Where Food Comes From
It's easy for children and grown-ups to forget how much goes into getting food onto our plates.
A tiny seed needs:
soil + water + sunshine + time
And then there are the farmers, growers and all the people who help bring that food from field to fork.
Harvest gives us a lovely opportunity to say:
“Thank you.”
Thank you to the people who grow our food.
Thank you to nature.
And thank you for the food we have to share.

🌻 And finally...
Harvest Festival doesn't have to be complicated.
It's simply a chance to pause and appreciate what we have.
The food on our plates. The people around us. The changing seasons. The trees, plants and wildlife. And those small, everyday moments that make childhood feel special.
So pull on those wellies. Find the crunchiest leaves. Come home to something warm and cosy. And let autumn take its time.
Step outside. Slow down. Let play take its time.
